Title: Edward Grigg, British conservatism, and the Empire
Abstract: This dissertation examines the diverse nature of conservatism and imperialism in Great Britain during the first half of the twentieth century by investigating Sir Edward Grigg, Lord Altrincham. His views are analyzed and compared with those of other leading conservatives and imperialists of his generation in Britain.
The chief primary sources used are the collection of Grigg's personal papers held at the Bodleian Library, Oxford University, as well as the papers of other conservative imperialists. Because Grigg was more a journalist and writer than a politician or government official, his articles and letters written for periodicals and newspapers are carefully considered, in addition to his six books published between 1931 and 1955. Secondary sources include relevant scholarly books and articles relating to British conservatism and imperialism in the twentieth century as well as biographies of leading figures of Grigg's generation.
This dissertation concludes that there was no unanimity among either British conservatives or British imperialists during the first half of the twentieth century, when individuals such as Grigg clashed with his contemporaries over Ireland, the Middle East, India, Africa, Europe, the United States, the Dominions, race, finance, and trade.
