Focusing on the period 1932-1952, this study analyzes (1) the rural women who joined Arizona's mid-century home demonstration clubs and the home field agents who worked with them, (2) the homemaking, leadership, and citizenship skill-building projects that formed the foundation of all home demonstration club work, (3) the pedagogical methods employed by the agents to teach these skills and to convey specific values such as thrift, self-reliance, adherence to the family wage, national economic and cultural integration, adult and child education, consumerism, cooperation, and personal responsibility, and (4) the recreational "entertainments" organized by rural communities to stimulate better physical health, individual morale, and camaraderie among neighbors. Using the Extension's "guided self-help" principle, Arizona farm and ranch women of different classes, races, ethnicities, educational backgrounds, and locales cooperatively planned comprehensive, far-reaching training projects for rural homemakers. Moving their families and communities upward on the rural living standards scale by employing scientific advances in nutrition, psychology, sanitation, and health, as well as industrial organizational concepts such as time efficiency and energy conservation, rural Arizona homemakers made great strides in improving the daily lives of their families throughout the twenty years included in this study. |
