Title: The Reformation in Worcestershire, 1524-1558

Abstract: The impact of the Reformation on the counties of England is an important aspect of English religious history. Until now, no one has researched the repercussions of the Reformation in Worcestershire, generally thought to be a conservative area. During the mid-Tudor period, the government had a religious policy that ranged from the position of anti-papal control of church government, moving to overt endorsement of continental Protestant doctrines, and ending with a return to Catholicism. What had an even greater effect on the church and people of Worcestershire were the personal religious beliefs and the administrations of the different Bishops of Worcester. This study demonstrates that Worcestershire was not a strong Catholic region, but actually the people moved away from a Catholic position. Later recusancy needs to be seen as an Elizabethan phenomenon, rather than a product of longstanding Catholicism. This is not to say that the Worcestershire population were Protestant during this period. Many moved to a neutral Christian position, adhering to neither brand of doctrine.
