Title: The triumph of intolerance: Fr. John Creagh and the Limerick pogrom of 1904

Abstract: Anti-Semitism proved to be a major problem in early twentieth century Europe. Although few nations were free of this anti-Jewish prejudice, many historians considered Ireland to be the exception. However, anti-Semitic prejudice impacted Ireland on a level similar to that found on the European continent. In 1904, John Creagh, a Roman Catholic priest from the Redemptorist Order, led a pogrom against a small Jewish population in the Irish city of Limerick, Creagh accused the Jewish community of usury and unfair business practices. His goal was to force the defenseless community out of western Ireland. Creagh's ultimate objective was one of revenge, as he held all Jews responsible for the expulsion of his own order from France in the aftermath of the Dreyfus Affair. With the blessing of the Redemptorists and the help of the largest Confraternity in Europe, John Creagh launched his anti-Jewish movement. The Limerick pogrom of 1904 remains the single most significant anti-Semitic event in Irish history.
