Title: THE 1965-1974 FACULTY STATUS MOVEMENT AS A PROFESSIONALIZATION EFFORT WITH SOCIAL MOVEMENT CHARACTERISTICS: A CASE STUDY OF THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK (ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS)

Abstract: U.S. academic librarians have been attempting to achieve recognition as faculty since the turn of the century. This effort, known as the faculty status movement, was especially active from 1965-74. State University of New York (SUNY) librarians were extremely active during this period. This case study identifies four distinct eras in the SUNY librarians fight for full recognition as faculty: (1) The period from 1965 through June 1958 when SUNY librarians successfully lobbied to have the SUNY Board of Trustees Policies amended to give librarians academic rank which accorded them faculty voting privileges and eligibility for continuing appointment; (2) The period from July 1968 through December 1970 when SUNY librarians formed the SUNY Librarians Association (SUNYLA) to lobby the SUNY Central Administration for full faculty status including academic year appointments and salary parity with classroom faculty; (3) The period from January 1971 through July 1973 when collective bargaining came to SUNY and SUNYLA focused its energy on convincing the newly elected bargaining agent, the Senate Professional Association (SPA), to take up the librarians' full faculty status cause; and (4) The period from August 1973 through December 1974 when SUNY librarians became disillusioned and convinced that the likelihood of achieving full faculty status was small and consequently focused their energy on making SUNYLA less of a lobbying group and more of a professional association.

This historical case study provides empirical data for the study of professionalization as a folk concept. It also extends the Bucher and Strauss conceptualization of segmentation within professions. This in-depth study of the SUNY faculty status movement also sets the foundation for future research on the history of the wider national faculty status movement.
