Title: A STUDY OF THE ORGANIZATIONAL IMPLICATIONS OF FACULTY STATUS FOR LIBRARIANS IN THE COLLEGE LIBRARY (DECISION-MAKING, PARTICIPATION)

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between faculty status for academic librarians and the organization and governance structure in selected four-year college libraries. The theoretical framework by means of which the librarys' organization and governance structure was measured was obtained through a review of the literature, consultation with selected academic library directors and staff members invited by the directors, and a sample mailing of a preliminary version of a survey instrument sent to library directors at selected academic libraries in various parts of the country.

By means of a mailed questionnaire sent to 300 college libraries throughout the United States, the researcher was able to determine not only the relationship between faculty status for librarians and library organization and governance, but also the organizational nature of the library and the role of librarians in the library's decision-making process. Included in the survey were academic libraries at higher education institutions awarding either the baccalaureate or equivalent degrees or degrees above the baccalaureate, but lacking or having extremely limited doctoral programs. From this population sample, 235 responses were received, resulting in a 78 percent return rate. Of these, 30 were judged unusable. This resulted in a return rate of 68 percent for usable responses.

It is important to note that data for analysis were obtained from questionnaires completed by library directors. Thus the study tests for perceptions of the libraries' chief executive officers on the organizational structure of the library and the role of librarians in library decision making.

Results revealed a positive association between librarians' status and library organization. The level of association was well down the scale of possible values used to measure that association, however. A cross tabulation of two status categories (i.e., faculty status or no faculty status) revealed that the two status categories did not differ considerably from each other in levels of significance of observed association.

The study also found a positive association between librarians' status and their participation in decision making. The level of association was found to range from extremely little to moderate, however, when controlled for nine areas of decision making. It would appear that neither providing faculty status for librarians, nor denying librarians such status, had a significantly higher level of association, when examined by forms of participation, regardless of area of decision making.
