Title: A STUDY OF PERCEPTIONS OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTION OF THE LIBRARIAN AMONG ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS, FACULTY MEMBERS, AND LIBRARIANS AT PUBLIC COMMUNITY JUNIOR COLLEGES IN GEORGIA

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to ascertain, analyze, and compare the similarities and differences in perceptions of administrative officers, faculty members, and librarians regarding the Georgia public community junior college librarian’s administrative function, and to identify factors which might be significantly related to these perceptions.
The primary objective of this study was to determine the perceptions of administrative officers, faculty members, and librarians relating to: 1) the conditions restricting the librarian from providing ideal library service, 20 the present degree of responsibility librarians currently assume for selected activities and responsibilities, 3) the degree of responsibility librarians should assume for selected activities and responsibilities, and 4) the priorities of these activities and responsibilities.
The general hypothesis tested was there is no significant difference in perceptions of the administrative function of the librarian among administrative officers, faculty members, and librarians. In order to test this general hypothesis, differences between the present and ideal role and differences in perceptions of the actual and ideal roles were investigated. Differences in the degree of restrictiveness for the conditions affecting the ideal library service and the differences in perceptions of the actual and ideal role attributable to situational variables were also examined.
This study was limited to the twelve public community junior colleges in Georgia, and the population included all administrative officers and librarians and a stratified random sample of the faculty members.
The data were collected by a direct mail questionnaire designed to elicit three types of information: 1) personal and situation information concerning each respondent, 2) perception of conditions which restrict librarians from providing ideal library service, 3) perceptions regarding the degree of administrative responsibility which librarians do and should assume.
Data were analyzed by means of ISR 109, a data description program. The statistical techniques of one-way analysis of variance, range test, and t-test were employed using the Biomedical Computer Programs BMDOID, BMBOIV, and BMDO7V; the 1967 Florida State University Computer Center version of MATT; and the University of Colorado Institute for Behavioral Science Program 222.
Significant differences between the perceptions of the actual and ideal roles of the librarian were found for administrative officers, faculty members and librarians. There were no significant differences in the perceptions of the actual role. There were significant differences in the perceptions of the ideal role.
There were no significant differences in the degree of restrictiveness for the conditions as to present and ideal role according to the activities and responsibilities of librarians that may be attributed to the situational variables.
