Title: THE ATTITUDES OF ACADEMIC LIBRARY DIRECTORS OF TRADITIONALLY BLACK INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION TOWARD WHITES AND THE EFFECT OF THEIR ATTITUDES ON THEIR HIRING PRACTICES

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the racial attitudes of head librarians of traditionally black academic institutions toward whites and determine the effect these attitudes have on their hiring practices. The attitudes of designated library directors were ascertained, identified, and analyzed in relationship to their hiring practices. Further analyses were done as they pertained to the relationship of attitudes of respondents and their sex, age, race, education, library experience, and professional association.

The population for this study was composed of head librarians of traditionally black institutions that were accredited by their respective regional accrediting agency, and with enrollment of 600 or above.

The data were collected by means of a direct mail, self-administered questionnaire developed by the researcher. Part I of the questionnaire contained six demographic items. Part II contained ten policy and institutional data items and Part III contained fifty-one attitude statements. The five-point Likert response scale was used for section. III. The usable response rate was 66 percent. Marginal frequencies and narrative description were used as the appropriate analysis procedure for this study.

The data analysis revealed that all respondents had a positive attitude score. Only sixteen scored above the mean for the group while twenty eight scored below the mean. These scores reflected that sixteen head librarians had a favorable attitude and twenty eight had a less favorable attitude. Their attitude did not affect their hiring practices as those practices pertained to hiring whites. Most of the respondents had the authority to employ whites, had vacancies on their staff, and applications in their files from whites, but did very little about employing whites.

There was a relationship between the racial attitude and sex of respondents. Male respondents had a more favorable attitude than females. As for the relationship between attitude and age, the respondents in the age range 45-55 showed a more favorable attitude than other respondents. There was a relationship between respondents’ attitude and education. Respondents with a subject master’s plus masters in library science had a better attitude than those in other educational levels. Those respondents with less than ten years library experience showed a more favorable attitude toward whites than those with more years experience.

Head librarians of traditionally black academic institutions have a positive attitude toward whites and these attitudes are not necessarily followed in their hiring practices.
