Title: Elementary schooling and literacy in eighteenth-century England, 1730 to 1780

Abstract: This is a study of school provision in three English counties--Lancashire, Staffordshire, and Wiltshire--during the mid eighteenth-century, 1730 to 1780. A new classification scheme for early modern schools is proposed and used to analyze the structure and extent schools and to demonstrate variety and utility of elementary schooling in eighteenth century England. The pessimistic view of elementary schooling in the eighteenth century is refuted. The relationship between schooling and literacy is explored and the efficacy of various literacy measures is discussed, with special attention to marriage register signatures. These are shown to be a moderately good measure of literacy, but rather imprecise for that purpose. The role of the charity school in society is assessed through a case study of the Wilton Boys' Charity School.
