Title: STRATEGIES FOR PROCESSING SELF-EMBEDDED SENTENCES IN SPANISH AND ENGLISH

Abstract: In parallel experiments, 12 English and 12 Spanish speaking subjects read right-branching and self-embedded sentences with 0, 1, 2, or 3 subordinate clauses, in their native language. Subjects read the sentences one word at a time, the subjects controlling the rate of presentation by means of a computer keyboard. The reading time for each work was recorded. After each sentence, subjects performed one of four comprehensive tasks. Several measures of sentence difficulty were analysed, as was sensitivity to syntactic units. Results and reading times indicated that although both Spanish and English speaking subjects responded in similar ways to different sentence types and lengths, their reading times for words which indicated syntactic boundaries differed markedly. Results of the comprehension tasks indicate that Spanish and English speaking subjects differed in their understanding of self-embedded sentences with two subordinate clauses. These results are discussed in terms of the relative importance of the clause as a perceptual unit in the two languages, and the implications for theories of sentence processing.
