Contrary to what Soviet historians had suggested, it is erroneous to consider Danesh as an "Enlightener," i.e., a conduit between the Russian center and the Central Asian periphery. Danesh was an Islamic reformist who, after witnessing the most important event in the pre-modern history of Central Asia, i.e., its conquest by Tsarist Russia, realized the need to revise the socio-political structure of his society in order to prepare it for the momentous events which he anticipated. His reformist plan called for the return of a more ethical and just political system which he thought had been abandoned by Muslims in general and the citizens of Bukhara in particular. As the best representative of the Tajik culture (which should not be confused with its modern Iranian and Afghan cousins), Danesh and his works are worthy of examination within the larger context of Iranian-Islamic civilization. |
