This is done by reconstructing the cultural and historical context in which the image was shaped (Ghaznavid territory in today's Afghanistan on the borders of India), and by identifying the field of its references in contemporary histories and poetry. Next, the transmission of this archetypal image is investigated. The broad network of texts in which this image was solidified is traced across three centuries and the horizon of its reception, both among authors and princes, is measured. It is argued that in Central Asia, India, and Anatolia, as late as the time of the establishment of the Mogul and Ottoman empires, princes read these texts and tried to present themselves as a ghazi king in the style of Mahmud of Ghazna. Furthermore, it is shown that by learning about the image of the ghazi king, these later princes would actually merge with the archetype and become the model. |
