Title: The automaton: A historical study of a cultural and intellectual symbol

Abstract: The automaton, or a machine that mimics a living being, has been a powerful cultural and intellectual symbol throughout European history. This study examines the exact nature of its meaning and the various transformation in significance the object went through from the early modern era to the interwar period in the twentieth century. It utilizes philosophical, scientific and literary sources to elucidate the perennial fascination the automaton has commanded throughout the centuries, as it continues to do so to this day.
