Title: The politics of modernism: Charles Peguy's "Cahiers de la Quinzaine", 1900--1914

Abstract: This dissertation is a study of Charles Péguy's avant-garde literary and political review, the Cahiers de la Quinzaine , published in Paris between 1900 and 1914. It examines the nature of the Cahiers ' avant-gardism and the implications of this conception of avant-gardism as it relates to contemporary debates in the historical and literary fields about the political implications of modernism. It does so by placing the Cahiers in the context of their times, namely against the backdrop of the emergence of mass democracy in France, the phenomenal growth of the literary market, the larger literary and artistic trends of Péguy's day, debates about the laicization and democratization of France's public school system, and the question of Jewish identity in France. The argument of this thesis will be that the divergence of the Cahiers from what is commonly considered to be characteristic of the avant-garde's commitment to internationalism and universalism came as Péguy and the équipe of the Cahiers sought to articulate what it meant to be a socialist avant-garde against the background of a particular political and cultural situation. At a very basic level the context in which the Cahiers sought to articulate what political engagement meant provides one link between their commitment to a revolutionary social vision and a kind of particularism that was not inconsistent with either nationalism or an interest in France's cultural heritage. In this respect this thesis is part of a growing literature which sees connections between modernism and nationalism as inherent to the project of modernity itself and not just a result of the patriotic pressures brought about by the First World War.
