Title: Memories of colonial Korea in postwar Japan
Abstract: This dissertation examines the historical formation of competing evaluations of the colonial period in Korea (1910-1945). I look at three groups in particular, namely Japanese progressive historians, former colonial officials in Korea, and intellectuals of Korean descent in postwar Japan (Resident Koreans). Along with a number of conscientious Japanese historians, Resident Koreans condemned Japanese rule, especially measures like the assimilation policies that had served to eradicate elements of Korean culture such as the Korean language. My research analyzes the ways in which these critical narratives of Japanese imperialism were constructed vis-à-vis the positive evaluations of Japanese colonial rule by former colonial administrators and conservative politicians in postwar Japan.
I use the term "collective memory" as a tool to analyze the links between historiography and the contemporary political agendas of various historians. Chapter two focuses on the postwar shift to a more critical interpretation of Japanese expansionism in Korea. Chapter three explores the writings of Resident Korean intellectuals, including materials censored by the American Occupation authorities (SCAP). Chapter four looks at the activities of former colonial officials after 1945, especially their efforts from the late 1950s to establish archives of historical materials and a body of scholarship that would vindicate their record in colonial Korea. Chapter five examines the connections between postwar studies of colonial Korea and acts of political resistance, such as the opposition to the diplomatic normalization talks between Japan and south Korea. The conclusion assesses the above-mentioned contributions to postwar Japanese historiography and evaluates the contemporary legacies of these early postwar debates, such as the opposition to fingerprinting by Resident Koreans as part of the alien registration process in Japan.
