SCHOOL: ADVISORS: COMMITTEE MEMBERS: MPACT Status: Incomplete - Inspected Title: THE POLITICAL CAREER OF JOHN BROWN GORDON, 1868 TO 1897 Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the political career of John Brown Gordon, from 1868 to 1897, in an effort to discover his political, racial, and economic views. Of the twenty-nine year period encompassing his political career, Gordon actually devoted over half of those years to the public service of the state of Georgia. He served as United States Senator from 1873 to 1880 and 1891 to 1897, and governor of Georgia from 1886 to 1890. The primary sources of information for this study have been state of Georgia and United States governmental publications and documents; Gordon's executive and personal correspondence; and local newspapers. Information was also gathered from pertinent books and articles as well as unpublished theses and dissertations. |
