Title: Revolution outside the Revolution: 'Leftist' intellectuals face Mexico's official 'Revolutionary' party since 1929
Abstract: This is a study of intellectual leadership. It examines how leftist intellectuals in Mexico achieved prominence but were unable to capture the state. It analyzes the evolution of leftist intellectual discourse that developed in Mexico after the Revolution of 1910, and explores how they opted to chart an independent course--outside the Revolution--for most of the 20 th century.
Drawing on interviews with intellectuals, memoirs, biographies, and newspapers and periodicals of the day, this study examines the role of leftist intellectuals in Mexican politics. This work is organized chronologically in order to explain the development of the left discourse over time. After an introductory chapter that reviews the literature and defines leftist intellectuals, chapter 2 provides a general overview of the early development of grassroots intellectuals, during and after the Mexican Revolution of 1910, and the role independent Marxist intellectuals played between 1921 and 1933 in the emergence of the post-revolutionary state in Mexico. Chapter 3 examines the rise of Cardenismo as a leftist current of thought and its ascendance to power from 1934-1940. Additionally, it examines how the generals turned-ideologues mobilized support for the social reforms promised by the Revolution. It also deals with the internal causes within the Left that led to its decline. Chapters 4 and 5 examine the period between 1940 and 1967. This period witnessed the decline and renewal of leftist intellectuals and their conflicting relationship with the state. These chapters also discuss the emergence of the first modern labor conflicts and rural insurgency in Mexico that led to the eruption of new social movements in 1968. Chapters 6 through 7 cover the period from 1968 to 1981. It traces the emergence of new social movements and the political crisis that resulted form the 1968 student movement. These chapters map the intellectual debate that took place inside different left organizations from the student movement to the formation of a unified left party in 1981. Chapter 8 covers the period between 1983 and 1994. It focuses on the response of new left activism to neo-liberalism, the rise of neo-cardenismo, and explores why the political left was unable to mount an effective long-lasting counter-offensive. This chapter also discusses how the state presented a project to lure left intellectuals into the official party, and concludes by discussing why the eruption of the Zapatista rebellion in 1994 opened a new chapter for the left in Mexico. Chapter 9 provides a view of the trajectory taken by leftist intellectual after 1968 and their relationship with the state.
