The dissertation seeks to reintegrate religion into the study of rulership, society, and art in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It deals with the pilgrimages of the Habsburg emperors to Mariazell from the beginning of the reign of Ferdinand II until the last pilgrimage of Maria Theresa (1620-1770). It looks at the details of planning an imperial pilgrimage, the relationship of the court and administration to imperial travel, the frequency, length and itineries of trips to Mariazell, ideas and models of pilgrims represented by the Habsburgs, changing religious sensibilities, dynastic patronage of the Church, architectural programs of the dynasty, and noble support. Royal pilgrimage and religious patronage concern not only religious belief and practice, but also touch upon issues of political legitimacy and integration, popular culture, and artistic expression. From the early seventeenth century onwards, Mariazell surpassed all other pilgrimage sites in central Europe in the number of pilgrims it attracted and the honor in which it was held by the Habsburg dynasty. The period represents broad continuities in the role of pilgrimage in the life of central Europe's Catholics and yet encompasses a major shift in the attitude of the Habsburg monarchy towards this religious act of devotion. |
