Punjabi migration occurred in three 'waves': pre-1946, after 1946 and post-1965. The immigrants who came prior to 1946 were primarily uneducated, rural, male laborers and, like other Asian immigrants, were subjected to the most racist immigration legislation this country has ever seen. The second group came after immigration restrictions against Asian Indians were lifted and a small quota of 100 immigrants per year was established in 1946. The last wave consisted of highly educated, urban professionals who arrived with intact families. I have combined oral historical methodology with archival research to complete the research necessary for this dissertation. The research indicates that the Punjabi community within the United States has clearly maintained many aspects of their ethnicity: food, religious holidays, and cultural attire and cultural holidays are a few of the more visible ones. Similar to the pattern set by other immigrant groups, Punjabi Americans are losing their ethnic languages by the third generation. The greatest area of change is in the marital traditions and gender roles. |
