Title: A forgotten community: The Mudejar aljama of Xativa, 1240-1327

Abstract: This dissertation studies the conquered Muslim, or Mudejar, community of Xàtiva, in eastern Spain. It analyzes the organization of the community after the Christian conquest and its evolution until 1327. Following Xàtiva's surrender to the Christians, its Muslim population was allowed to remain in situ . In a manner similar to the Islamic dhimma , the crown of Aragón granted a series of privileges to the Mudejars which allowed them to preserve their Islamic way of life. The Mudejars of Xàtiva became a community within the Christian society, organized under the leadership of the qadi or Muslim judge.

This community, however, did not function as a separate entity. Immediately following the Christian conquest, the Mudejars of Xàtiva began to feel the effects of acculturation. The Christians imposed on Mudejars ideas and institutions that were contrary to Islamic practice. For example, the Mudejars of Xàtiva were governed by a corporation similar to the Christian universitas .

An increase in Christian population in the 1270s further intensified the acculturative process. As a result of the population pressure, the Mudejars of Xàtiva suffered spatial segregation, an erosion of their legal privileges and tax abuse at the hands of local Christian officials.

The Mudejars, of Xàtiva were also affected by the increased political tension that existed between the crown of Aragón and Granada. Beginning in the 1280s, the Granadan light cavalry often raided the southern kingdom of Valencia. Xàtiva was especially affected by these military incursions because of its location. The 1287 Granadan attack resulted in mass Mudejar emigration from Xàtiva and the subsequent impoverishment of the community. This allowed Christians greater involvement in the internal functioning of the aljama of Xàtiva.

Nevertheless, the Mudejars of Xàtiva did not remain passive in the face of Christian acculturation. The Mudejars of Xàtiva, the largest such community in the kingdom of Valencia, responded to abuse from the Christian society by appealing to the king, and by using the most powerful weapon at their disposal, emigration to Granada or to lands controlled by the nobility or the church.
