It explores the historical events surrounding the cinchona bark trade and conceives this trade as a fundamental factor linking caudillismo with an emerging export economy. In nineteenth century Bolivia, the depleted national treasuries created conditions for the instability of the emerging state. The necessity for revenues and capital for a stagnant economy stimulated the search for non-traditional export products in demand on European markets. The growing demand for cinchona bark, the basic ingredient in the manufacture of quinine, in the 1830s and 1840s by the British and other nations contributed to the emergence of a cinchona bark trade network in the frontier regions of the Department of La Paz. The cinchona bark trade, in these previously neglected regions, influenced Bolivia's politics and economy, and created the conditions for the rise of the populist caudillo Manuel Isidoro Belzu. |
