Title: African-American and Chicano political organization and interaction in Los Angeles, 1960-1973

Abstract: African Americans and liberal Jewish Americans coalesced around the campaigns of Tom Bradley for both the city council and the mayoralty of Los Angeles during the 1960s. Chicanos were conspicuously absent from this and other liberal partnerships despite overtures from coalition members. Their low levels of involvement in inter-group political activities can be attributed to fears of joining with groups more powerful and more organized than themselves and having their agenda subordinated to that of the larger coalition effort. They were less politically organized than African Americans and, therefore, less powerful. The disparity in the power levels of these two communities is due to the differences in the historical development of internal institutions within each group and the respective differences in their relationships with external American institutions.
