Title: First tango in Paris: Latin Americans in turn-of-the-century France, 1880 to 1920

Abstract: This dissertation explores the structure and activities of the Latin American colony in Paris from 1880 until 1920 with the larger aim of comprehending how this colony contributed to the economic, political, and cultural transformations that gripped turn-of-the-century Latin America. The growth of international commerce, the promotion of European immigration, the clash of modern and traditional values, and the emergence of national and pan-national cultural identities were at the heart of Latin America's entrance into a global system of trade, diplomacy, and culture during this period. They are also phenomena whose full trajectory cannot be understood without examining Latin Americans' activities in Paris.

This study begins with an analysis of Latin America's participation in the Universal Exposition of 1889 as a way of highlighting the agendas and activities of the Latin American colony in Paris. It proceeds to describe Latin Americans' lifestyles and social interactions in Paris. It then explores the activities of Latin American diplomats, journalists, and publicists aimed at promoting European trade with and immigration to Latin America. Next it examines how the intellectual environment of Paris contributed to the creation of an Americanist aesthetic and ethos. The dissertation concludes with World War I, an event that signaled the decline of Latin America's cultural, political, and economic relations with Europe.

This work employs a socio-cultural approach. As a social history, it delineates the components of a society within a society. As a cultural history, it draws on new theories related to the experience of travel and travel writing, expositions, and social rituals. Sources for this work include personal and governmental archival materials, exposition publications, novels, memoirs, travel accounts, and many of the newspapers and journals published by Latin Americans in Paris.

This dissertation contributes a Latin American perspective to the growing trend to relate European travel with identity creation in the Americas. However, it goes beyond many of these studies by analyzing how Latin Americans attempted to influence the European environment to further economic, political, and cultural agendas that were inextricably linked to national and pan-national identity formation.
