Title: The graphic method: Inscription, visualization, and measurement in nineteenth-century science and culture

Abstract: This dissertation examines the theory and practice of the graphic method of visual representation in science and culture during the 19th century on the basis of published and archival evidence. It is argued that the method of using self-registering instruments to produce graphic curves along an x,y coordinate grid played a crucial role in the development of the new science of dynamics by making it possible to inscribe, visualize, and measure forces in terms of the variable of time. The dissertation describes the transfer of these methods from their origin in practical physics and engineering to several other scientific disciplines and cultural practices, including physiology and medicine, linguistics, and art production. It is argued that each transfer of the graphic method encouraged a reorganization of individual scientific disciplines and, by the end of the century, emerged as a general configuration of representation widely used in science and culture.
