Developed from centuries-old popular traditions of association, mutual aid societies (like friendly societies in England and the U.S.) offered members economic support in case of sickness, accident, and old age, as well as social solidarity. By the late nineteenth century, two million French workers, artisans, and employees joined local mutualist groups--four times the number who enrolled in unions. This choice--at present little understood--suggests that radical ideology was less effective among French wage-earners than older corporate rituals and traditional forms of social protection. Situated at the frontier of the working classes, mutual aid groups fostered popular sociability, an active and organized citizenry, and a moderate trade-unionism in twentieth century France. |
