Title: Bolekaja intellectualism: The genesis of syncretistic model building in communication for development in Africa

Abstract: The present dissertation explored African scholarly discourse of issues of communication as it relates to development. The objective is to identify the various schools of thought on the issues and submit emerging works to critical review. To differentiate the various viewpoints on communication for development in Africa, this dissertation presented sketches of the intellectual histories of the schools of thought with the goal of identifying their major philosophies and defining characteristics.

As an exploratory project aimed at the formulation of hypotheses for possible future empirical testing, the present dissertation has also attempted to critically review as case studies specific communication and development theories, models and strategies proposed by selected scholars in the various schools of thought.

With the bolekaja metaphor borrowed from African literature and literary criticism as a theoretical framework, this dissertation attempted to identify the sites of disagreement among the various schools of thought in the discourse and present analytical discussions of their arguments, draw conclusions and make recommendations for future research.

The major site of the intellectual struggle embroiled in by the various schools of thought in the dissertation was identified in the present dissertation as African gnosis which some African scholars claim has historically been defined and controlled by the West. Since the 1920s, African intellectuals in such academic fields as literature, philosophy, religion and history have vigorously fought the monopolistic and domineering constitution of knowledge about Africa by the West. In the present dissertation, the focus is, of course, not on literature or religion but on the manifestation of this intellectual conflict or bolekaja in the discourse of communication as it relates to development in Africa.
