Title: Motivation et culture en e-Learning

Abstract: Current e-Learning systems have two important limitations: they neither consider the motivation nor the culture of learners. Both of these factors have an important impact on the process that allows e-Learning systems, and particularly Intelligent Tutoring Systems, to adapt to learners in a relevant manner.

Our work aims at determining how these factors can be integrated in e-Learning systems. Therefore we study the specificities of motivation and culture and we describe how they influence the e-Learning process. This leads us to propose two modular architectures, the first enhancing the consideration of learners' motivation and the other enabling systems to be culturally aware. These architectures were used to develop a prototype of motivational and culturally aware multi agents system.

A first evaluation demonstrates how learners' motivation can be enhanced by the use of our prototype, which in turn improves the overall quality of learning.

We perform a second evaluation in order to corroborate that, during a learning session in the context of our prototype, a learner is able to stay focused on the learning task. Moreover, this evaluation confirms the positive interest of using physiological measurements to estimate, in real time, the learners' motivational state.

Keywords: e-Learning, Intelligent Tutoring Systems, motivation, culture, multi-agents system, learner model.
