Title: MEXICAN LABOR ACTIVITY IN SOUTH TEXAS, 1900-1920
Abstract: This dissertation provides an interpretative historical analysis of independent and affiliated Mexican workers' organizations in South Texas during the earliest stage of minimal Mexican incorporation into predominantly Anglo labor federations. A condition of economic domination, intensified by social discrimination and justified by an anti-Mexican climate, reinforced a sense of Mexican group identity, contributed to feelings of discontent, and precipitated labor activity.
Mexican labor activity involved independent workers' organizations as well as urban and rural unions affiliated with the American Federation of Labor, the Texas State Federation of Labor and the economic arm of the Texas Socialist Party. Both independent and affiliated Mexican workers' organizations maintained alliances as part of an incipient socio-political movement that included Mexican organizations of different types from throughout the state and Mexico.
Ambivalence, indifference and occasional hostility on the part of Anglo labor federations kept Mexican workers' organizations politically isolated. Consequently, most Mexican workers participated in independent workers' organizations which were significantly influenced by the labor movement in Mexico.
With some important exceptions, the AFL and the TSFL generally discouraged Mexican participation within their ranks. The Socialist Party, on the other hand, demonstrated more interest in incorporating Mexican workers, yet it was ambivalent in lending necessary support to Mexican organizers. The minimal and incomplete incorporation of Mexican workers was exacerbated by increased social discrimination and political repression based on fears that Mexicans posed a threat as job competitors, strikebreakers, and carriers of revolutionary thought. Consequently, Mexican incorporation into the Anglo federations was minimal and remained dependent on the organizing initiatives of Mexican workers and their organizations.
