Title: Newswork: Negotiating professional reality (a study of a news organization in Nigeria)

Abstract: This study uses the participant observation research method to examine the nature of newswork in Nigeria. The study finds that Nigerian newsworkers are confronted with a professional dilemma because of contradictory notions of newswork that operate in Nigeria. On the one hand are their Western-derived libertarian orientations which encourage news media to act as a watchdog by overseeing government activities. On the other hand are national development needs which sustain a socio-political environment that encourages news media to act as agents of the government for the promotion of development policies and programs.

The study finds that in dealing with this dilemma, Nigerian newsworkers tactically and strategically maintain a delicate blend of Western and indigenous attributes of newswork, and that newswork in essence is a process of negotiations between newsworkers and competing influences in the socio-political environment for mutually acceptable definitions and contents of news.

The study identifies individual interests of newsworkers, organizational factors such as professional orientations and socio-political factors such as the government and interest groups as major influential elements in the negotiations. The study concludes that despite the mythic predominant paradigm of journalism that presents news media as an objective enterprise and newsworkers as surrogates of public truth, news is a negotiated product that reflects compromises derived out of negotiations among the competing influences.
