Title: Development of knowledge-based model management systems: Framework, prototypes and experiment

Abstract: Model Management (MM) recognizes decision models as valuable organizational resources that deserve proper management, and is considered a crucial part of Decision Support Systems (DSS). The research presented in this thesis was initiated with the recognition of an inherent problem of MM research, namely a lack of practical applications. The research aims at rectifying this problem by developing a comprehensive conceptual framework that characterizes problem solving situations where utilization of Model Management Systems (MMS) can benefit decision makers. In doing so, the framework prescribes guidelines for the design of MMS. The framework delineates different situations with three dimensions--modeling tasks, problem type, and user type--and the characteristics of each situation lead to the formation of functional requirements of MMS. Therefore, the nature of the framework is prescriptive. Another important notion embedded in the framework is the ordinality across the framework dimensions, which makes it possible to design and develop MMS incrementally.

In an effort to substantiate the conceptual framework, two strategies were implemented: prototyping and experimentation. Based on the framework, two versions of prototype MMS were developed to demonstrate how the design guidelines for specific cases can be put into working computer software. In developing the prototype MMS, a knowledge-based approach with frame representation was implemented in Prolog. The software development efforts were focused on transforming the functional requirements, which are identified by the framework, into actual MMS functions. The two prototype MMS were used in an exploratory laboratory experiment that was designed, performed and analyzed as a part of authenticating the framework. The main theme of this exploratory experiment was to investigate the efficacy of the framework by comparing framework-conforming situations and non-conforming situations. Although the experiment examined only a part of the framework, it has resulted in supportive findings and has added credibility to the framework.
