The research presented in this thesis was initiated with the recognition of an inherent problem of MM research, namely a lack of practical applications. The research aims at rectifying this problem by developing a comprehensive conceptual framework that characterizes problem solving situations where utilization of Model Management Systems (MMS) can benefit decision makers. In doing so, the framework prescribes guidelines for the design of MMS. The framework delineates different situations with three dimensions--modeling tasks, problem type, and user type--and the characteristics of each situation lead to the formation of functional requirements of MMS. Therefore, the nature of the framework is prescriptive. Another important notion embedded in the framework is the ordinality across the framework dimensions, which makes it possible to design and develop MMS incrementally. |
