Title: THE ORGANIZATION OF SERIAL ORDER IN TYPING

Abstract: I examine a complex motor skill, the transcription of prose by novice and expert typists. Keystrokes, timing, and in some sessions a video record of the hands and keyboard are used as evidence. Two studies of the timing of keystrokes find evidence that multi-character response units are formed with practice. An analysis of expert and novice typing errors suggests how the specification of hand, finger, and position is made, and how the proper serial ordering of the keys insured. The outline of a model of typing consistent with these data concludes the dissertations.
