Title: A CONCEPTUAL MODEL AND EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM USE

Abstract: The term "decision support systems" originated in the early seventies. It denotes computer-based information systems designed to provide assistance to managers in dealing with problems which are only partially amenable to analytic techniques. These systems emphasize providing the capabilities needed and desired by the manager to support his decision-making process. These capabilities take the form of decision aids which include information display, quantitative analysis techniques, and simulation models. The logical organization of these decision aids into specific applications are known as Specific DSS.

Concentrating on decision aids, a detailed descriptive model of a DSS is developed. Further, it is proposed that these decision aids be categorized by their use. Data analysis aids are primarily used to condense and filter data, whereas decision analysis aids codify gathered information and decision-maker knowledge to support the evaluation and choice phases of decision making.

Based upon empirical evidence, a conceptual model of the use of these two types of decision aids is developed. In essence, the model argues that depending on the type of decision aid and the nature of the application, managerial usage may differ over time. The model further suggests that these trends also apply to the use of database items and occurrences. The influence of individual differences are incorporated and their possible effects discussed.

Using a repeated measures design, an experimental gaming study was conducted to partially validate a subset of the conceptual model's propositions. Ninety-six MBA students participated in the sixteen-week study.

The empirical findings support the contention that the development and use of Specific DSS or decision-maker designed applications results in improved performance. Further, the subject's previous quantitative experience was found to be significantly related to DSS decision aid use, however, performance was not effected by this experience.
