Title: Emotional Aspects of the Online Information Retrieval Process

Abstract: The online information retrieval process is an experience that is influenced by and results in changes of the emotional states of the user. A logical extension in the development of information retrieval systems is an inclusion of emotional components with the aim of optimizing user experience. In order to develop systems capable of recognizing and intelligently responding to human emotions, it is necessary to develop a framework for measuring and analyzing user emotional experiences. We conducted a study that investigated patterns of emotional expressions around specific search events and examined the role of mood the online information retrieval session. The study discovered unique patterns of emotional expressions associated with the decision-making points of online search. The study also identified mood variations and their relationships to the search process and outcomes. In addition to improving our understanding of emotional aspects of information retrieval, the study tested instruments for measuring emotional expressions and mood that can subsequently be incorporated in the system design and testing process.
