Title: Native American women and community work in Phoenix, 1965-1980

Abstract: This dissertation examines women and community work among Native Americans in Phoenix between 1965 and 1980. The rapid growth of the city's American Indian population in the postwar years created a need for services, and community members actively sought federal funding under the various Great Society programs. Employing feminist theories of political participation, this study shows that women played significant roles in the creation of these services and in community formation. As volunteers in church organizations, Indian women applied traditional notions of womanhood and community in the urban context. These roles established their credibility as committed members of the community, and they expanded the boundaries of womanhood to include professional community work and political activism. In these activities, women came to recognize inequalities in the system and identify issues based on gender. They also created a female network that they used to organize as women to address their concerns as Native American women and as members of Indian communities. Issues of gender thus became intertwined with issues of race, class, and ethnicity. This dissertation establishes the link between these concerns and provides a starting point for scholars to explore further the connections between Native American cultural traditions and feminism.
