Title: Behavioral, cognitive, and psychophysiological correlates of intimate aggression: An integrative study of aggressive couples using a prisoner's dilemma task

Abstract: The relationship of behavioral, cognitive, and psychophysiological responses to a simulated marital interaction to husbands' intimate aggression was examined. A community sample of aggressive and non-aggressive couples completed an iterated Prisoner's Dilemma task in which they were led to believe that they were playing against each other, when actually all spouses were competing against a computerized opponent. Aggressive husbands were less likely to give cooperative responses in the game, were more difficult to train to be cooperative, were more likely to retaliate in response to a spousal defection, and were more likely to defect on trials that offered a large potential personal gain. An expected valence model showed that aggressive spouses played more selfishly, putting less weight on their spouses' potential gains on the task, relative to their own gains. Some evidence was found for greater physiological reactivity in spouses from aggressive relationships, with husbands showing greater heart rate reactivity and wives showing greater cortisol reactivity, in anticipation of the beginning of the task and after the completion of the task.
