Title: SELF-PACING AND INSTRUCTOR-PACING IN A PERSONALIZED SYSTEM OF INSTRUCTIONCOURSE

Abstract: "The contribution of certain client variables to treatment dropout was studied by comparing terminators with remainers at community mental health clinics on seven measures of passive-dependency. The central assumption of the study was that passive-dependent clients present a greater dropout risk because of their need to remain passive and to rely on the therapist for advice and problem solving. Previous research has suggested the importance of the client's ability to assume an active, collaborative role in psychotherapy. A second hypothesis was that passive-dependency is made up of two components: the need for structure and the need for approval or love from others.

The rationale for the study was that premature termination in psychotherapy is a widespread problem that adversely affects the delivery of mental health services. Early identification of those clients at risk for premature dropout opens up the possibility of devising specific interventions to reduce premature termination.Terminators were defined as those clients who attended at least one psychotherapy session and who dropped out before completing the sixth interview. This figure was chosen because it represents the median length of treatment at mental health clinics. The following were used as measures of passive-dependency: the Dominance and Docile-Dependence scales of the Interpersonal Checklist (ICL), the Deference, Succorance, Autonomy, and Dominance scales of the Adjective Checklist (ACL), and the Internal-External Locus of Control Scale (LOC).

The seven measures were studied by a principal components factor analysis to determine the underlying structure. The resulting two factors supported the hypothesis that dependency could be conceptualized as a two-factor construct involving needs for structure and needs for approval. A step-wise logistic regression analysis using succorance, dominance, and socioeconomic status as variables classified correctly 78.8% of all remainers in therapy. The chi-square statistic for the model was significant ((chi)('2)(3, n = 56) = 14.06, p < .01). This analysis suggested that it is the individual with a high need for approval and for love and with an equally strong conflicting need for control who is a drop-out risk."
