Title: Complementary/alternative medicine related awareness, beliefs, and behavior of nurses who provide HIV care

Abstract: Infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) continues to be a significant public health issue in the United States. Allopathic medicine, specifically Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), has significantly reduced the mortality rate associated with HIV infection. HAART, however, has negative side effects, and some people find it intolerable for treating their condition. Some of those living with HIV turn to Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) to alleviate their symptoms. Since navigation of CAM options are fraught with uncertainties, and with the documented decrease in time patients spend with a physician, nurses tend to play a critical role in determining their choice of care outside or alongside allopathic treatments. This study examined factors associated with CAM-related awareness, beliefs, and behaviors of nurses who provide HIV care.

For this study data were collected from 285 nurses who provide care to people living with HIV. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the extent to which the addition of variables related to geographic region of nursing practice, CAM awareness, belief in the efficacy of CAM, and personal use of CAM would enhance the predictability of models that included demographic variables. Based on the results of these analyses, several significant logistic regression models were developed.

Results of this study indicate that while some traditional demographics such as higher education and income are predictive of a nurse's referral of CAM for people living with HIV, belief in the efficacy of CAM and personal use of CAM play an important role as well. These results may be important as health professionals seek to understand the relationship between health beliefs and health behaviors.
