Title: Image-making: A strategy for promoting congruity in preservice teacher education

Abstract: The purpose of the ensuing study is to determine, using qualitative methods, whether or not image-making is an effective methodology for promoting congruity in the context of a fieldwork experience. "Congruity refers to the process involving the match or mismatch between a stimulus representing a perceived self-image and a referent self-image" (Sirgy, 1986, p. 14). Referent image pertains to the images evoked from memory that are used as a standard to judge the perceived images evoked in real life situations. Perceived images of current situations are self-evaluative images evoked as a result of stimuli emerging from experience. In the context of pre-service teacher education, in this study, referent and perceived images pertain to images of classroom management knowledge and images of power projected in a classroom management situation. Image-making is a reflective process that uses graphic images as a tool to promote congruity between the pre-service teachers' referent and perceived images. Congruity is promoted by (a) offering a means of identifying one's referent image, (b) encouraging the process involving examining the match or mismatch between referent and perceived images, a period characterized by destabilization, and (c) offering a means of re-establishing or stabilizing one's referent image so that it is congruent with the actual scene of teaching.

This study is limited in focus to the domain of classroom management. Two research questions guide the study within this context. Do concept-maps, used in the process of image-making, promote congruity between pre-service teachers' referent and perceived images with regard to knowledge of classroom management? Do self-portraits, used in the process of image-making, promote congruity between pre-service teachers' referent and perceived images with regard to power associated with classroom management?

The results suggest that both the concept map and self-portrait promote congruity in all three periods of the pre-service experience. Additionally, the study demonstrates that graphic images are useful to pre-service teachers as reflective tools and result in high quality reflections.
