Title: La cultura amurallada: Tecnologias de la exclusion en la Argentina moderna (1876--1930)

Abstract: The point of departure of this work is that cultural production attains different levels of legislative agency that seldom remains uncontested. In contending that cultura is a vehicle of law I read texts, music, and images of Argentina's late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century as a site of conflict in which official and underground cultura clash on a regular basis. Miguel Cané's Ley de residencia , Pedro Wald's testimonial novel about the 1919 pogrom, Pascual Contursi's tango lyrics, and Roberto Arlt's Los siete locos are some of the cultural artifacts that illustrate how those clashes occurred. On the one hand, the State devised various strategies aimed at controlling people construed as enemies of the nation. I argue that these apparently unrelated strategies map an epistemic wall, a system of interconnected exclusionary devices saturated in violence that worked both at the discursive and at the material level. On the other hand, the attacked parties capitalized on the wall's visibility, and conducted operations of sabotage, dismantlement, and camouflage. As a result, the remains of a previously impervious wall often ended up serving as raw materials of cultural barricades that less privileged sectors of society put together to question the dominance of the State.
