The researcher used semi-formal and informal interviews as well as weekly observations to access and understand what experiences the student teachers were drawing upon as they attempted to make sense of their own teaching and as they formulated views of themselves as teachers. Of particular interest were data related to the influence of prior formal and informal education including teacher preparation experiences. In addition, the researcher focused on the participants' use of reflection (Schon, 1983) and negotiation (Britzman, 1991) as a means of making sense of the student teaching experience. Overall, data analysis revealed that the student teachers drew upon both prior experiences and their university preparation in learning how to teach. However, what they drew upon and how they negotiated their teaching was highly individualized and influenced by the setting and supervising teachers. In addition, all of the participants wanted more help in learning how to teach during their student teaching semester. As they practiced teaching they wanted another individual (supervising teacher or university supervisor) to spend more time observing them teach and to help them reflect on how to better their practice. |
