Title: Linking assessment to intervention: Utilizing experimental analysis of reading problems to develop individualized interventions

Abstract: Despite the efforts of large-scale intervention initiatives and special education reform, many school-aged children continue to fail with regard to their reading progress. Catching children with reading problems early in their academic careers is essential in preventing academic failure. Brief experimental analyses of academic performance are emerging as new tools educators can use to link assessment to intervention. This approach involves testing empirically validated treatments directly using single-case experimental design elements to select intervention strategies for academic skill problems.

The current study analyzed the stability and effects of treatment variables on students' oral reading performance, identified through a brief experimental analysis and confirmed by using an extended analysis. The purpose was to refine methods reported in previous studies and further evaluate the effects of oral reading performance interventions grouped hierarchically to develop individualized treatment recommendations. In addition, generalization of the interventions to other reading passages was assessed. Participants were six third-grade students who were identified as having difficulties with oral reading.

Results suggest that a brief experimental analysis could be used to quickly identify treatment variables effective in improving oral reading performance. Furthermore, the extended analyses found that, for the majority of the participants, the identified intervention was successful at improving oral reading performance when implemented over a period of time. Implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed in the context of the fields of reading intervention and experimental analysis procedures.
