Using Standard Subdivisions (Subheadings)

LCSH uses subdivisions or subheadings to make a subject heading more precise. There are four types of subdivisions:
  1. Topical subdivisions "limit the concept expressed by the heading to a special topic." 
  2. Mormons--Missionary experiences
    Copper ores--Analysis
  3. Form (Format of item--feature films, maps, periodicals, etc.)
  4. Sociology--Periodicals
  5. Geographical 
  6. Education--South Africa
    Mining claims--Utah
  7. Chronological (Time period)
  8. Art, American--20th century
    Art, Chinese--to 221 B.C.
Subdivisions can be combined to develop more precise headings.
