Northeast and Southeast Regional Workshop

East Carolina University and the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association will host a media workshop for high school students interested in mass communication. The workshop will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The $10 registration fee includes lunch.
During this intensive workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn practical techniques found in different aspects of journalism. Workshops will be taught by various professors, news anchors, journalists and scholastic media professionals.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with a commencement address by Dr. Linda Kean, director of the ECU School of Communication. Workshops will follow at 10 a.m. Topics covered will include field production, television anchoring, web content, feature writing and yearbook design.
Following the workshop will be a closing session by Mr. Bradley Wilson, coordinator of Student Media for North Carolina State University and recipient of the 2008 Kay Phillips Distinguished Service Award, given by NCSMA.

North-central Piedmont Regional Workshop

North Carolina A&T State University and the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association will host a high school workshop at the University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. The 12th annual workshop will take place on Thursday, Oct. 15 from 8 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. A $10 registration fee includes lunch.
The workshop will include sessions on a variety of journalism topics including newspaper writing, layout and design, yearbook, video editing, photography and more. High school yearbook and newspaper editors will also have the opportunity to participate in an Editors’ Only workshop that will include a roundtable discussion about challenges of editing.
A special session titled, “BET, MTV, AOL & TMZ: Is it TMI?” will address, for the first time, social media. The workshop will discuss the pros and cons of networks such as Facebook and Twitter and whether or not these forms of social media provide too much information to the general public.
Various professors, news anchors and journalists will host the workshops, including WFMY News 2 anchor/journalist Sandra Hughes, WFMY News 2 chief meteorologist Eric Chilton and WGHP Fox 8 reporter Bob Buckley.
Registration for the workshop will begin at 8 a.m. and the workshop will begin at 9 a.m. Participants are asked to arrive in time to receive registration materials before the start of the workshop.

Journalism Day (Northeast Piedmont and Southeast Piedmont Regional Workshop)

The News & Observer and the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association will host the 12th annual Central Carolina High School Journalism Day. The workshop will take place at the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication on Thursday, Oct. 22 from 8:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A $10 registration fee includes lunch.
The workshop will allow students and teachers to engage in different workshops, with a focus on sports media. Other topics include news writing, advertising sales, online news and media, yearbook design trends and more.
Participants will have the opportunity to engage in three workshops based on their individual preferences. Media professionals and journalism professors from the University of North Carolina’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication will teach the workshops.
NCSMA and the News & Observer request that high school students and teachers send in publications in order to better relate session topics to various high school newspapers and yearbooks. These publications will also be featured at a “share fair” table for other high schools to compare.

Southwest Regional Workshop

The University of North Carolina at Asheville and the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association will host an annual media workshop for high school students interested in pursuing journalism. The workshop will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 27 on the UNC-Asheville campus from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A $10 registration fee includes lunch.
During the workshop, high school students and teachers will have the opportunity to engage in three instructional workshops on various aspects of journalism. Session topics include magazine journalism, blogs and multimedia reporting, yearbook design trends, intro to radio broadcasting and more.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with opening remarks by Patrice Mitchell, dean of Admissions at UNC-Asheville. Instructional sessions will follow at 10 a.m. Sessions will be hosted by various journalism professionals, including WLOS-TV 13 member Chara Kamarhia, Asheville Citizen-Times photographer Steve Dixon, and national yearbook expert Bruce Watterson.

Northwest Regional Workshop
APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY

Appalachian State University and the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association will host the Northwest N.C. Journalism Day on Thursday, Nov. 5. The workshop, co-sponsored with ASU’s campus newspaper The Appalachian, will take place at the Broyhill Inn on the ASU campus from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A $10 registration fee includes lunch.
The workshop will begin at 8 a.m. with an optional tour of The Appalachian newsroom. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by instructional sessions. Media professionals and journalism professors from ASU, North Carolina State University and UNC-Chapel Hill will teach the workshop sessions.
High school student and teacher participants will have the opportunity to participate in one to two sequences. Topics will include yearbook theme and coverage, photojournalism, publication design fundamentals and more. The closing session will focus on social media and information gathering.
Professors and students from the ASU Department of Communication will also offer, for the first time, on-site flash critiques of high school news publications during lunch. If interested in participating, students are asked to bring a copy of their high school newspaper or yearbook and leave it at the registration desk.

South-central Piedmont Regional Workshop

The Charlotte Observer and the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association will co-sponsor the South-Central Piedmont N.C. Journalism Day. The workshop will take place at The Charlotte Observer building on Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A $10 registration fee includes lunch.
High school students will have the opportunity to participate in three instructional sessions. Session topics include killer graphics, press rights, magazine design fundamentals, social media strategies and more. Teachers will also have the opportunity to participate in a round table discussion led by Monica Hill, NCSMA director, and David Jackson, Northwest School of the Arts journalism teacher.
Check-in for the workshop will begin at 9 a.m. with a welcome from Charlotte Observer editor Rick Thames. Instructional sessions will follow at 9:30 a.m. Sessions will be presented by various Observer staff, including sports columnist Scott Fowler, multimedia producer Phil Hoffman and drama critic Lawrence Toppman.
