Oxford Orphanage

The Oxford Orphanage Farm, a Reminder of Days Gone By.

From the beginning the Orphanage grew a good portion of its own food and maintained a full dairy farm, which provided both food and training for the children. In 1994 the dairy and farm both were closed because they cost much more to operate than they produced - today the buildings are boarded up, and debris lays in the yard. Several private farmers rent some of the land from the Home. Each October the farm serves another purpose during Homecoming: The Oxford Orphanage Alumni Association holds a memorial service at the cemetary, and on Saturday evening of Homecoming weekend the Wake Forest Lodge puts on a forty-minute fireworks show for the children in the field behind the picnic grounds.
