Dear Carolinabirders,
After running two pelagic trips last weekend during which we saw record
numbers of seabirds, we have just a few folks signed up for this
Saturday's trip from Hatteras. This is kind of a mystery to me because
we had a full boat last Saturday and were almost full on Sunday. Despite
low subscription for this coming Saturday, we do plan to run the trip.
Thus it would be an excellent opportunity to get on the boat and have
lots of room to move around in the bow of the boat. Saturday's trip is
aboard the Miss Hatteras, a great boat for pelagic birding with two
decks, a big cabin, and food available for sale on board. The trip
departs Oden's Dock in Hatteras Village at 6:30 AM, returning around
5:00 PM with a cost of $85/ person.
Last weekend's trips from Hatteras were very eventful, with the largest
numbers of Cory's Shearwaters, South Polar Skuas, and Sooty Terns that
we have ever seen on Saturday, August 7, and the most Bridled Terns we
have ever seen the following day. We also saw a White-tailed Tropicbird
on Sunday's trip and a few folks got a distant look at a Fea's Petrel on
that trip too. Band-rumped Storm-Petrels were found in abundance both
days and a few Leach's Storm-Petrels were noted on Sunday's trip as
well.
The official counts for August 7 and 8:
Black-capped Petrel- 100/ 42
Fea's Petrel- One seen by a few on Aug. 8 (distant)
Cory's Shearwater- 6219/ 494 (possibly many more on Saturday)
Greater Shearwater- 210/ 34
Sooty Shearwater- Two on Aug. 8 were very late for NC waters
Audubon's Shearwater- 465/ 92
Wilson's Storm-Petrel- 285/ 57
Leach's Storm-Petrel- 0/ 3
Band-rumped Storm-Petrel- 32/ 48
White-tailed Tropicbird- One adult on Aug. 8
Red-necked Phalarope- 2/ 14
South Polar Skua- 7/ 2
Pomarine Jaeger- 1/ 0
Long-tailed Jaeger- 0/ 1
Bridled Tern- 5/ 111
Sooty Tern- 154/ 21
We also have room on the following trips:
August 28 from Hatteras
August 29 and 30 from Manteo (two day set f/ White-faced Storm-Petrel)
September 4 and 5 from Manteo (two Gulf Stream trips)
September 12 from Virginia Beach
