Hello, this is a March 9 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
HARLEQUIN DUCK
GLAUCOUS GULL
SHORT-EARED OWLS
LIMPKIN
COMMON EIDER
A female HARLEQIN DUCK has been present at the Rodanthe Pier or the Avon
Pier on the Outer Banks for a few weeks.
A first winter GLAUCOUS GULL has been present at Cape Hatteras Point for a
couple of months. Often this bird is seen begging from the fishermen at the
point.
Two SHORT -EARED OWLS were seen over the Bodie Island marshes on 2-24. Stop
at dusk 3.3 miles south of Whalebone Junction along Hwy 12 on the Outer Banks.
A LIMPKIN was seen at Savannah NWR in SC March 1-3 but has not been reported
since then despite searches. Birders at that refuge should still check for
this bird's presence. Look along the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive about 0.9
miles from the parking lot. There is a sharp 90 degree turn there. The WHITE
FACED IBIS and CINNAMON TEAL being seen at the same location have not been
reported for several weeks.
A female COMMON EIDER has been present at the Triple Ess Pier at Atlantic
Beach NC. This duck was seen 3-7 and 3-8 and may still be present.
Thanks this week to Giff Beaton and Keith Watson for their calls and reports.
Some of this information was gleaned from Carolinabirds.
