Haven't seen anyone report this yet and Sun. birders may be interested: A
large group on Cindy Fox's WildBird Center Sat.walk
were treated to an active heronry (4-5 nests, hopefully more by next
weekend) easily seen from the Big Woods Bridge area:
if turning onto Big Woods from Jack Bennett, park and walk to left side of
road before actual bridge area; look through trees to the
large pond at back where large beaver dam resides(find an angle that gives
good view) I believe this is east(?) side of road; look to bare trees beyond
pond, right of beaver dam, and high up; from best angle nests are visible
with naked eye, but scope/binocs of course preferred.
As far as I know this is a first for Big Woods Rd.
Meanwhile, UNC's Barred Owls have yet to go to nest, still sleeping away
the days in the quad holly trees - it's getting late.
