Folks,
From 2:00 PM till 4:00 PM this date, Bob Olthoff, Marilyn Westphal
and myself observed 5 dark ducks on Lake Julian. From several different
positions over 1-2 hours we obsevered them until we finally got clear enough
and close enough views to determine that they were female WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS. Twice we observed them in flight, and could clearly see the
prominant white wing panels in the secondaries. They were not showing the
full facial patterns as illustrated in the field guide. Birds can be
observed with the aid of a scope off the picnic area.
