C'Birders:
Had my first Brunswick county Purple Sandpipers today. On the beach of Bird
Island now attached to Sunset Beach in NC (eastern end of Bird I., western
end of Sunset Beach). Was on my way to jetty area and surprised to find 7
Purples scurrying around with 60 Sanderlings. Kinda cute. Also 3 Ruddy
Turnstones and an unbanded Piping Plover nearby. The Purple Sands. were
getting a bit of breeding plumage spots and color. On the way back up the
beach a couple of dogs were chasing the shorebirds and they split off from
the flock and headed back towards the jetty. Bird I. is not in Sunset
Beach's jurisdiction, so dog laws don't pertain.
There is a complete breeding plumaged Horned Grebe in the ocean water near
40 th St., the westernmost beach access . Also saw 3 Common loons in the
marsh, the ocean and the lagoon beyond the jetty, one in full breeding
plumage.
There is a mixed sparrow flock in the marsh as you come across the causeway
on the right. The no-seeums are back in that area. I pished up a couple of
Sharp-tails and the rest didn't respond to pishing, and I was getting rather
annoyed by the bugs so wear bug stuff if you want to bird marshes now.
Think some were Seaside.
We have been enjoying from 1 to 12 Glossy Ibises feeding in the vegetation
in the lake's edge of our lot for over a week now. Doubt if any are
White-faced!!
We THINK Toast and his Significant Other left 2 nights ago, I guess to
produce something like the picture of Hybrid Cinnamon and Blue-winged Teal
as found in Sibley's book.
Great Horned Owls calling back and forth between 3 and 4 this AM, along with
some squabbling Chuck-wills widows. If ya can't sleep at least we have
interesting things to listen to.
Inland at Makatoka area found Black-throated Greens in their usual spot and
also one new place, plus the usual stuff, like every one is reporting, tons
of Yellow-throated and Parula warblers, etc.
Along the Caw-caw Ditch found 3 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers nests, one the
biggest I ever saw, all covered in Lichens. I love watching them being
built.
Lynn reports a Louisiana Waterthrush at her stables, Fairwind, on Rt. 17,
but I couldn't find it. Maybe it's moved on. They've nested on the Caw-caw
before, which is a boundary to her property.
Any one coming to the Grand Strand in the coming holiday time drop by as the
Camellias and Azaleas are pretty good at Azalea Sunset (674 Sunset Lakes
Blvd, mainland, Sunset Beach). Feel free to walk around unannounced. We
have several hundred varieties of azaleas, but we are giving away GRACKLES.
GOOD BIRDING, MARY MCDAVIT
