Spring at Beaver Lake

Carolinabirders:
Our 7 April bird walk at the Audubon Beaver Lake Sanctuary in Asheville, NC
was an outstanding spring day with 70 degree weather, close to 50
participants (and 4 leaders!) and a great selection of spring birds.
Aside from the weather, the highlights were early arriving migrants, such as
Green Heron, Chimney Swift, Tree and No. Rough-winged Swallows, pair of
Blue-grey Gnatcatchers, scope views of a singing male Yellow-throated
Warbler (in full sunshine!) and a transient pair of Rusty Blackbirds.
Add to this a Broad-winged Hawk heard and seen later in the afternoon and
spring may have at last started here in the Asheville, NC area.
Onto the Ventures scene, our next day trips are a day looking for spring
migrants along Bent Creek at the NC Arboretum on 18 April and a botanical
visit to Douglas Falls on 25 April. Also we still have a couple of spaces on
the spring migration trip to Dauphin Island from 22-26 April. Migration here
can be spectacular and in the past we have seen blizzards of Indigo
Buntings, Blue Grosbeaks, and Painted Buntings, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher,
dozens of warblers, and several Black-whiskered Vireos.
